“The perfect charcuterie wine,” Cooney said. “It’s also great for tailgating!” Ripe blackberry fruit on the nose immediately gives way to piquant spice, hinting at the Syrah in this blend. The palate is plush and smooth, the tannins well-integrated, and the acidity moderate but balanced. The finish is elegant, carrying a lengthy core of fruit and warm spice. This is Cooney’s go-to barbeque, grilling, and charcuterie wine, so it’s a good thing football season is upon us.
“[Domaine Santa Guilietta] is several generations old,” Cooney said. “It’s always really cool when it stays in the family.” The Stefani family has been making wine on Corsica’s eastern plateau for decades; today, the estate totals 75 hectares, or more than 180 acres of vines, from familiar French heritage varieties like Grenache and Syrah to local Corsican grapes like Niellucciu [say: knee-ah-LOO-chew]. Though the family’s legacy on the island is steadfast, Corsica’s own history is less abiding; the small island has been a territory of France and Italy, off and on, for long enough that the local culture—from its food, to it’s music, and even its wine—pulls equally from the two nations, creating a unique convergence of dialect, cuisine, and vinous expression.
