Ameztoi, ‘Unicus’ Getariako Txakolina Metodo Tradicional Brut Nature 2016

Ignacio Ameztoi is the fifth generation of his family since 1880 to carry on the tradition of making txakolina in the province of Getaria, and the self-taught winemaker has played a key role in the advancement of the region in the last decade. His intuitive and fearless pursuit of innovation and tireless work-ethic has been a driving force in the txakolina discipline. Ameztoi’s inspiration to use the area’s signature low-alcohol and refreshing acidity as an ally to craft exceptional Metodo Tradicional sparkling wines has resulted in great new possibilities for the region. Unicus is a bottle-fermented sparkling wine made from select parcels of old-vine hondarrabi zuri grapes, located in some of the best positions 200m above the villages of Getaria and Zarautz, ancient Basque fishing villages on Spain’s rugged northern coast. Unicus is hand-disgorged after extensive lees-aging (6 years) in bottle and will improve with further cellaring.

Famille Moussé, Extra Brut Champagne

A grower since 1750, Champagne Famille Moussé sits in the village of Cuisles, in a valley perpendicular to the Marne river.  There are few vignerons who are as committed to environmental sustainability as 4th generation winemaker Cédric Moussé. Under his leadership, the winery has undergone a complete overhaul with the goal of reducing its carbon footprint. Coming from a perpetual reserve started in 2003, it's a delicate but cleverly opened-up, youthful style of dried apple and pear, peach and blossom, succulent with soft cherry but snappily dry and light-footed. 20% Pinot Noir adds a little structure and weight. Cédric Moussé turns out some of the Marne Valley's most refined, charming Meunier wines from the south-facing slopes of Cuisles on the north bank of the Marne river.

Lorenzo Negro, Roero Arneis Spumante

This Spumante was absolutely enchanting. Soft notes of Bosc pear, lemon candy, and fresh laundry had us all wishing we had ordered twice as much as we did. The next time you need a bubble, I strongly recommend you to try this sparkling Arneis.  2010 was the first vintage produced by Lorenzo and was done so in a very limited quantity. Don’t worry, this wine is so good that there will be more for everyone for years to come. For a first attempt, this wine strikes an incredible balance, making it so easy to enjoy. Encapsulating the minerality that is Arneis, the spumante also shows off some great fruit and floral notes. Tiny bubbles linger in the glass with an acidity that cleans your mouth better than Listerine. Many times we will hear how a wine is a reflection of the winemaker themself, and that could not be more true than in the case of Lorenzo’s wines. Lorenzo will always remind us about this connection when saying “My name is in on the label, so this wine represents everything that I stand for.” The consistency and integrity of his wines is a direct result to his diligence and talent.
